Tackling the east coast in 2 weeks back in ’93

. Disney Cousin Bill and Mary’s house Rosemarie and Tom’s house Craig and Deb’s in Valdosta Aunt Pat and Uncle Bill’s in New Jersey After I got divorced, vacations were a solo parent event.  The first year, the four of us spent a week at Papoose Pond in Maine, camping.  It was the first time I had camped as an adult and to say it was a learning experience would be an understatement. So, the following year, buoyed by the confidence from the year before, I decided to take the kids to Florida – mainly to go to Disney.  Amy had been the year Adam was born but the others…

What is the best souvenir you have received or bought for yourself?

We usually equate traveling with souvenirs. A lot of us want to bring something home that will remind us of our trip or bring a memento to loved ones not able to make the trip with us. Do you have a special one that you either couldn’t go home without or that someone brought for you? Every time I traveled since way back as a kid, I would spend my money on some tacky, kitschy souvenir shop trinkets. Once home, it would be displayed but eventually, after many trips, what do you do with all those lobsters made of shells that say Cape Cod? It wasn’t until I was in…

If you could be teleported anywhere in the world, where would you go?

teleport [ˈteləˌpôrt] VERB teleported (past tense) · teleported (past participle) (especially in science fiction) transport or be transported across space and distance instantly.  In some situations, teleporting is time traveling across space. Where would you go? Originally contemplating this question, I was imagining going somewhere to view something that I had dreamed about – i.e. – travel destinations, a bucket list destination.  And then, I read the last line of the above definition: In some situations, teleporting is time traveling across space. Time Travel.  YES!!!! So, I would definitely go back to the year 1977 – the year after I graduated and since I am fantasizing about this – let’s pick a Saturday…

Have you ever traveled out of the country?

International travel is something that a lot of people dream about but never get the chance to do. This week we are asking – have you ever traveled overseas or out of the country? When my girls were little, my husband wanted to take them to see where he was born and lived for the first decade or so of his life. We boarded a plane for Sao Miguel in the Azores on a Friday afternoon in September. September was significant because not only was this going to be a trip of introductions but also, we were going to be there during a large religious feast that takes place in…

When a vacation ends, are you happy to go home or sad it is ending?

People are usually heading out on vacations with huge smiles on their faces and a pep in their step.  But what about coming home?  Are you looking forward to home? Or sad to leave? I am actually writing this blog post on the plane on the way home from a two-week vacation in Florida and I can say that I am feeling somewhat bittersweet. I am sad to leave my grandkids – always seems too short when I have to say goodbye to them. I am excited to get back to my camper on the weekends, I miss that little home that I can call my own. I am going…

Have you ever been sick on vacation?

Vacations come with high expectations usually and when you are doing a high energy experience, you have to be feeling up to it.  But this week’s question is this – have you ever been sick on a vacation? On my second honeymoon, we checked in, unpacked and then headed out to a reservation previously made for dinner.  If you know me, you know that I am a planner and every second of this very special vacation was planned and accounted for.  One night getting ready for bed, I felt a bit “off”.  I just thought that maybe the heat, our constant going and the very rich dessert that I had…

How would you compare the feeling of a big train station to a big airport?

There are airport terminals and train stations all over this country.  Which have you been in and how would you compare the feeling of a large airport versus a train station.   Scroll down to see what Ellen and Pam think.  I do not really remember the train station in Philly as a kid but there are three others I can speak about as an adult; South Station in Boston, Grand Central in NYC and Union station in DC.   As far as airports – I’ve been in Boston/Logan, Chicago/O’Hare , DC/Dulles, Atlanta and Houston/George Bush.  To compare, I would have to say that the airports have all been more mall-like, somewhat sterile and cookie cutter.  The train stations however, tend to be in very old…

Have you ever spent the night in a train sleeper car?

Trains. Some of us use them to commute to work. Some for travel. Our question this week is – have you ever stayed in a train sleeper car? Yes.  Yes I have. When I was little and residing in Massachusetts, my mom’s family lived just outside of Philadelphia.  Because my mom did not have her license, if we wanted to go visit without my Dad, we would take the train.  My Dad would always buy us a little private room and we would travel at night.  I can remember one trip in particular.  I had to use the toilet which was just next to the door and with perfect timing, the conductor came…

    Are you a souvenir buyer?

No matter where you travel, there are usually a variety of shops that provide different types of souvenirs that you can take home with you.  Do you buy? And if so – do you go for the kitsch or the specialty items? Over the years, I have purchased a lot of what I later deemed junk.  Keychains, hologram pictures, pins, fridge magnets, postcard books; things that I would put into my memento box and not see again until I decided to pull it out and take a walk down memory lane.  About 20 years ago, I finally had the idea that I should be buying something that WON’T be put…

Is there somewhere you’ve vacationed that you’d like to return to?

Vacation. Getting away from it all and simply enjoy your days, see some new things, make some new memories.  Our query today – is there a vacation spot that you would like to return to ? I can honestly say that most places I have vacationed are places I would return to.  I loved the resort in Mexico where my every whim was catered to and I did nothing more than read, swim, eat and relax.  I am thinking that I could replicate that experience anywhere they offer an inclusive package and I would not notice too much of a difference. I love the vacations where I have visited my…
