The house out back.
This is the carriage house that was in the back of my grandparents.
From the time I can remember until the time the house was sold, it was rented as two apartments – one first floor, one second. I do remember checking out both floors in between renters and being captivated by the layouts of both – especially the second.
I happen to know that the first floor housed my parents, my brother, and I before we moved out to 217 in Raynham. The living room is where my Mom found their dog with my head in his mouth as I was crawling across the floor. The story goes that she entered the room, screamed, the dog let go of my head, and scrambled under the couch. My Dad walked in to my Mom screaming and “bowling” crochet balls under the couch at him.
Needless to say, I don’t remember that dog, I think he was rehomed soon after.
This little spot always intrigued me – as a youngster and then a young adult. It still does – and I’d love to see how it has evolved with it’s new owners.
Originally a small carriage house on our grandparents’ property in W. Newton, our Dad and grandfather renovated it and made two apartments out of it. It’s where our parents and Craig lived before moving to Raynham in the mid-50’s.
My only knowledge of it is pictures from when they lived there; during my childhood and teens, there were always tenants living there.
I did have the opportunity to live there when I went to college but the pull of living on campus and having a ‘true college experience’ won over and I opted not to.
The home just always said ‘English garden flat’ to me and tickled my fancy.
- Are you or have you ever been a landlord?
- Have you been bitten by a dog?
- What are the special places of your childhood?
Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.

I once got fired from a canned juice company.
Apparently, I couldn’t concentrate.
